What is a WordPress template?

What it is NOT
❌ Template does not replace content — you must enter your own texts
❌ Template does not replace SEO — this is done through plugins + content
❌ Template does not replace plugins functional (shop, forms, etc.)
Two models
Model 1: Classic Template
The template has predefined layouts pages. You mainly edit content in Gutenberg / Classic Editor. Less flexibility, more speed.
Examples: GeneratePress, Astra (without page builder), Blocksy.
Model 2: Template with page builder

What to check before buying a template
1. PageSpeed Insights Demo
Enter the template demo URL in PageSpeed Insights. Purpose:
– Mobile: 80+ / 100
– LCP: < 2.5 sec
– CLS: < 0,1
If the demo is 50/100, your website will be too.
2. Update frequency
Check update history:
– WP.org Repository: "Last updated"
– ThemeForest: "Last update"
Objective: last update in the last 3 months.
Templates not updated > 1 year = abandoned, security risk.
3. Number of active installations
- < 1,000: risky
- 1,000-10,000: small community, OK for niche
- 10,000-100,000: solid
- 100,000+: safe
4. Reviews (critical!)
Read negative reviews (1-3 stars). They show real problems.
Questions:
– Does the author respond to reviews?
– What are common problems?
– Does support work?
5. Documentation
Check documentation page template. Is:
– Installation explained?
– Feature list with screenshots?
– Video tutorials?
Lack of good documentation = problems in the future.
The Pitfalls of "Free Premium Templates"
❌ "Download Premium for Free" — pirated files from malware or backdoor in 90% of cases
❌ Avada for 5 PLN on Allegro - same problem
❌ Random ThemeForest for $30 — often untested, weak code, abandoned
Principle: buy directly from the author or from the official marketplace.
The most common mistakes
❌ Choosing a template after a "nice demo" — performance is more important than wow factor
❌ Avada / Divi in 2026 — past, poor SEO, slow
❌ Skipping performance test — template "nice", page "free"
❌ Buying an outdated template — old PHP version, security risk
❌ Mixing 3 page builders — Elementor + Divi + Avada Builder = chaos and freedom
