WordPress vs Joomla vs Drupal – Which CMS to Choose in 2026 (for a Small Business)

Text
Contents

The three biggest free CMSs, but the choice only seems difficult — each has a different target audience. I'll show you which one is right for your company, based on 8 years of implementations (mainly WP, but a few Joomla and Drupal projects too).

In short

  • WordPress — 43% of all websites in the world. The simplest, largest ecosystem, best for blogs, stores, and service websites.
  • Joomla — niche, good for portals, sites with a large number of users and editors.
  • Drupal — enterprise, public institutions, websites with very complex permission logic.
  • For 95% of small businesses in PL: WordPress.

Why CMS at all?

CMS (Content Management System) is the "administrator panel" for a website - it allows you to edit content without knowing HTML/CSS. Static page (Handwritten HTML) requires a programmer for every change. A CMS gives you independence.

WordPress - for 95% of businesses

Advantages

  • The largest ecosystem — 60,000+ plugins, 12,000+ themes. There's practically no feature that hasn't already been written by someone.
  • The simplest operation — after an hour of training, the client edits content, uploads photos, and adds entries
  • Strong PL communities — forums, FB groups, Polish plugins (Flexible Shipping, WP Desk)
  • Free — engine only PLN 0. You pay for hosting (PLN 10–80/month) and optional premium plugins
  • Best SEO — Yoast and Rank Math are industry standards. Strong focus on core SEO

Defects

  • Plugin spam — a lot of low quality in the catalog, you have to know how to choose
  • Security — most popular = most frequently attacked. Requires regular updates
  • Great initial knowledge for a developer — to create advanced projects (custom post types, REST API)

Best suited for

  • Company websites (business cards, landing pages)
  • Online stores up to 10,000 products (WooCommerce)
  • Blogs and content portals
  • Restaurants, law firms, salons, freelancers

Joomla - for portals with a large number of editors

Advantages

  • More advanced permissions system than WP - easier to manage when 20 editors have different permissions
  • Better built-in features — multilanguage, content control, ACL work without plugins
  • Smaller target for attackers — fewer mass attacks
  • Free — like WP

Defects

  • Small plugin database compared to WP (10,000 vs 60,000)
  • A steeper entry threshold — less intuitive admin interface
  • Fewer Polish developers — find a contractor = harder
  • Weaker SEO out-of-the-box - requires manual configuration
  • Fewer hosting offers dedicated to Joomla

Best suited for

  • News portals with 10+ editors
  • Internal company services with different roles
  • Intranet sites
  • Pages where the author requires the entry to be "approved" by a moderator

Drupal - for institutions and very complex projects

Advantages

  • The best enterprise security — it is used by the White House, NASA, Tesla
  • Extremely flexible — The "Field" field in Drupal is an absolute foundation. You can build any content structure you want
  • Perfect multi-site — One Drupal installation supports 20 sites
  • Best GDPR — built-in compliance functions

Defects

  • A very steep entry threshold — neither the client nor the inexperienced developer will handle
  • Roads to maintain — Drupal developers in Poland are taking 1.5–2× more than WP
  • Small PL community — if there is a problem, Stack Overflow is empty
  • No ready-made "cool" themes — most Drupal sites look like government ones from 2015
  • Updates are a disaster — major upgrade Drupal 7 → 9 → 10 is often rewriting the project from scratch

Best suited for

  • Public institutions (offices, ministries)
  • University websites
  • Corporations with strict compliance requirements
  • Multi-site systems (e.g., a network of 50 websites from one brand)

When WordPress Definitely

  • You are a small or medium-sized company (up to 50 people)
  • Your website is a business card / blog / store with up to 10,000 products
  • Want to be able to edit content yourself?
  • Implementation budget < PLN 30,000
  • Need a quick start (<60 days)

When to consider Joomla

  • You have a portal with 10+ editors and need fine-grained ACL
  • You are doing a multi-site for a network of 5+ websites
  • Your team already knows Joomla (maintaining competencies)

When to consider Drupal

  • You are a public institution with public procurement requirements
  • You have a corporation with strict compliance (medicine, finance, energy)
  • Implementation budget PLN 100,000+
  • You need multi-site for 20+ websites from one platform

What other options? Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Shopify?

All of this Closed SaaS — you get CMS in the subscription, but you don't have a code nor data. Migration in the future means rewriting from scratch.

  • Wix — quick start, but no SEO experts, limited store functions
  • Squarespace — nice out-of-the-box design, but weak Polish market
  • Webflow — designer parade, but expensive ($24–$212/month) and difficult for a non-technical customer
  • Shopify — dedicated e-commerce, great for 1,000–100,000 products, expensive ($29–299/mo + transactions)

At websky-studio.pl/ we recommend WordPress + WooCommerce for 95% of customers, because they get:
– Full ownership of code and data
– Infinitely expandable
– Low maintenance costs
– Migration without problems in the future
